15th British and Cultural Studies Conference
Medialised Britain

Passau, November 18th to 20th 2004

Call for Papers:
The media have enjoyed a particularly long and time-honoured tradition in British culture. In addition to performed drama and printed literature, the introduction of the first periodicals and journals in the 18th century served to create a new public sphere which stimulated the political discourse of the Enlightenment and was frequently identified as the backbone of British politics. In the course of the 20th century, journalism had to compete first with radio and later with film and television as major providers of news, information, entertainment and education. More recently, computerisation and digitisation have opened up entirely new forms of interactive communication and of new (virtual) realities.

The organisers invite contributions from scholars working in this broad field of media studies. Individual papers may address historical topics but generally the emphasis should ideally be placed on contemporary issues. These include the form, function and aesthetics of various media as well as their implications for political, social, power- and gender-related aspects of British culture.

Proposals and abstracts should be sent to the organisers by 1st May 2004. A selection of papers will be published in the volume of conference proceedings.

We are looking forward to meeting you in Passau.

Best wishes,

Jürgen Kamm, Bernd Lenz
